19 Feb The New Golden Age of Rail Travel?
Have you noticed the increase in travel programmes on TV about the joys of rail travel? I’m not referring to the train travel that many of us experience, the daily commute or a daytrip to London. No, what I’m referring to are those programmes highlighting the joys of rail travel, the scenic rail journeys taking in some of the most wonderous sights and sounds our glorious planet has to offer.
In our busy lives, we are constantly on the move from one place to the next, ticking things off the “to-do” list at a pace which is all consuming. The joy of taking a break from the treadmill of our day-to-day lives is that we can slow down and enjoy the experience, people and culture which is around us. The journey itself is the destination.
According to the latest ABTA Travel Trends Report the rise of “slow travel” is a key trend of 2020. The demand for rail travel is increasing with plans for European rail networks to expand as travellers are considering ways of reducing their carbon footprint by flying less and choosing a more environmentally friendly way of travelling. According to www.seat61.com the CO2 emissions per passenger on a journey from London to Paris are 91% less when travelling by Eurostar than if we go there and back by plane.
And travelling by train can be so much fun – eating a three-course silver-service meal in a formal dining carriage, the excitement of sleeping on a train in a proper bed and being rocked to sleep by the humming sound of the tracks waking in a new destination ready for a day of discovery and adventure – idyllic! All this is without even talking about the scenery that you witness! Magical!
So where to go, what to see? There’s an array of rail journeys available to the traveller – probably more than you think – here’s my snapshot
Luxury & Iconic – From South Africa’s Blue Train from Cape Town to Pretoria to the Silver Leaf Service on Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer, this is a travel experience like no other. Sumptuous accommodation, fine dining and personal service as standard.
Closer to Home – Travel to European Cities without having to schlep through airport security and passport control – and you’ll probably find the journey itself hasn’t taken much longer. In fact, there’s no need to even leave this isle – the UK offers an array of heritage railway tours, from the peaks of the Scottish Highlands to the mountains of Snowdonia.
Coast to Coast USA & Canada – Travellers can visit 46 of the 48 United States on the North America’s railroads with Amtrak. Combine this with Canada’s VIA Rail and the possibilities for your own adventure are limitless.
Rail & More – Combine overland train travel with an abundance of other experiences – maybe a luxury journey over the sea on one of the world’s finest cruises, exploring the backwaters of Kerala, hiking in the Pyrenees or walking the West Highland Way.
Let’s see if this snippet of train journey facts will inspire you to think about your next adventure!
– The Glacier Express covers 91 tunnels and 291 bridges
– The Ghan Australia travels from Darwin in the North to Adelaide – a journey of 2000 miles
– The Trans-Siberian Railway is one of the world’s longest train routes, taking 22-days covering 5772 miles
– The Golden Eagle Danube Express crosses an incredible eight countries on its 2000-mile passage
Booking rail can become complex, depending on the journey you’re looking to take, mainly due to the different rail systems and booking rules. So, whether it’s a journey of a lifetime on an iconic train, three-night rail city break, or an adventure combining several beautiful cities, I can make this happen. As an independent travel agent, I can remove this complexity. Together we can plan routes and itineraries that are customised to your individual requirements and budget, tailor-making the holiday that’s just right for you.
And this doesn’t just have to be the train journey itself; I can book hotels, excursions, transfers and sightseeing tours all provided for your convenience and budget. I can even book the UK rail travel from your local station! All you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the journey.
