26 Feb Our Half-Term Ultimate Relaxing Experience
My family really looks forward to the October Half-Term holiday. It’s our down time, when just the three of us get away from the cold, dark nights and before the craziness of the Christmas season means we hardly see each other! We’re always reticent to say goodbye to the summer and when the winter sun holiday beckons we all get a little giddy!
We were among the tens of thousands who were impacted by the collapse of Thomas Cook meaning that our originally planned winter-sun holiday to Bahia Del Duque in Tenerife was cancelled. We were determined to still get away, but a rethink was had around the dinner table. We had been to Tenerife for the past three years, so where else could we go?
Roll forward one month and we were arriving in Paphos, Cyprus, an island we hadn’t visited for over ten years, so we were overdue a visit!
Elysium is in Paphos, at the end of a quiet residential street, next to the Tombs of the Kings overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, 45 minutes from the airport.
From the moment our taxi pulled up in front of the hotel, the staff were on hand to ensure that we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The calmness that struck me on stepping into the cool marbled-floored lobby, along with the refreshing welcome drink had the desired effect; I was on my holiday, time to chill!
I’d read beforehand that the personal touch is added to every detail of this luxury hotel and I can certainly vouch that that is indeed the case. Arriving at breakfast on our first morning, we were personally welcomed by our first names, and given a tour of the restaurant ensuring we knew where everything was. This personal service continued when we’d found our spot by the outdoor pool area, cascading waterfalls and manicured gardens greeted us, as did the drinks service!
We opted for the half-board option and were not disappointed. The hotel has three speciality restaurants – Japanese, Greek, Italian as well as the excellent buffet restaurant. The speciality restaurants must be booked – we arranged the entire week on our second day and were able to reserve tables in all three. They are intimate so do book as far in advance as you can. All the food was sublime, tasty and fresh paired with a varied wine list including local, Cypriot options.
We had booked a room with a balcony and sea view and boy it was a glorious view. The room was light, airy with plenty of storage for three of us with a bed that is now in my top 5 hotel beds for comfort and sheer bliss! Another plus was that our daughter’s bed was a proper bed and not a sofa bed and we still had plenty of space to move around the room. Daily maid service including night turn-down, well-stocked mini-bar, Greek sweets and a superb dressing table complete with a “proper” hairdryer delighted us all, especially our daughter!
If you are looking to explore outside the confines of the hotel the concierge is first class. Nothing is too much trouble. Extremely knowledgeable, helpful and efficient. We paid for a private wine tour and we were not disappointed. Our own driver and 4 hours’ worth of time to explore the local area, vineyards and a spot of lunch. Idyllic! Or if it’s just a stroll you’re after, Paphos harbour is a half-hour walk along a sturdy, mainly flat coastal path. Perfect for a mid-morning coffee to watch the world (and fishing boats) go by!
Sitting on the flight home last October, I asked my family to sum up the “best bits” that they’d pass onto anyone looking to holiday in Cyprus and stay the Elysium – so here goes
- Choose to take afternoon tea on the terrace – the cakes are divine!
- If the weather takes a turn cosy up in the library or take a swim in the indoor pool
- Indulge in a treatment (or two!) at the Opium Spa. Pre-book before arrival to ensure you get maximum choice of dates and times
- Sample the extensive cocktail menu watching the sun go down on the terrace
- A morning run along the coastal path is the perfect way to start the day
- Enjoy the evening entertainment on offer which ranges from dance shows to singers
- The adults only pool is a haven – give it a try!
- Champagne with breakfast – well we were on holiday!
With prices in May from £1276 per person for seven nights including flights, private transfers, accommodation on a half-board basis in a side sea view room, I highly recommend this hotel as the perfect relaxing getaway!
